Core studies week 5

Often the day starts with an "information exchange" - some would call it chat - on a good day it includes talk of exhibitions seen and show'n'tell of books. Today's surprise and revelation was a book on Austrian painter Maria Lassnig (born 1919) - colourful figures, and an obvious lack of interest in backgrounds!

I spent the morning making a little book that had drifted into my head during the wakeful reaches of the night, and the afternoon playing around with cardboard, with a view to translating it into clay -Those cut-out snippets are probably the direct result of seeing the film "Collage to Montage" about Charlotte Hodes at the Jerwood Space the night before (see the trailer here).

One of the tutors suggested I try drawing on the models, so I gave it a try - something that could be developed -

I need to play around with the lighting, think about the different shapes, try other kinds of cardboard, and develop the drawing. Making little "quotes" from other bits of architecture might be one way forward ... on the other hand, it might be a sidetrack and dead end.
