Books are for more than just reading

Browsing in the library yesterday lunchtime I came across the work of Tina Hill - specifically Excavating Babel, on show at Solihull till 8 May. She's used over 2000 books to make this towering, walkthrough installation. (And there's an artists' book fair on Sat 20 March at the library.)Spanish designers luzinteruptus placed 800 illuminated books under the Brooklyn Bridge, New York, so that people could walk among the easily - and read them, even take them home.
'We want literature to seize the streets and become the conqueror of public spaces, freely
offering to those who walk by a space free of traffic which for a few hours of the night
will succumb to the modest power of the written word,'

Currently showing in Montreal, The Great Wave or Saltwater Memories incorporates 400 books - and a fan to make them undulate gently. Each book represents one of the families that immigrated to New France; the family names have been embossed on the covers by Marc Lincourt. More info and photos here.
