The "TravelWriting" is largely disorganised, and having so many disparate bits lying around is causing problems for getting it up onto its blog. Also, there's the question of how to display it. So I made a lot of photocopies to experiment with. One possibility is these "towers" - although they're more "sculptural", they just don't feel right as a vehicle for the TravelWriting -The photocopies also got used to make several printing blocks - I'll try them out asap -
These blocks show the negative spaces; I'd like to do an etching, to show the actual lines. Hmm, a torn-paper screenprint would give this kind of effect ...
While folding the photocopies into "towers" I wondered if four folds were necessary. Having just two folds makes a little boat, which I like a lot - the TravelWriting looks very much like waves or even a stormy sea sometimes. Next step is to figure out how any words would fit on, and from that, where to start writing, top or bottom, inside or outside -
These "vessels" can be various sizes. I'll be trying them with different papers and pens next time I'm travelling -
I like the idea of linking the travel writing to boats and vessels - a means of transport. I'm sure there is a good paragraph of "arty speak" in there somewhere - you could enable it with all sorts of meanings and arty depth.
ReplyDeleteYour boats immediately brought to mind the refugees who are arriving in Australia in leaky boats, after placing their trust in the people traffickers whose only vested interest is in getting paid. Australia's history is one of people arriving in safe harbour after fleeing their homes - from the Irish escaping the potato famines, to the post WW2 European influx, to the Vietnamese in the 1970's and now the Afghan, Iraquis and Sri Lankans The stories of their journeys and their courage are truly remarkable. Travel writing and boats definitely belong together in my mind and conjure up a huge range of images and thoughts!
