South African baskets

This started as a "wordless wednesday" post, but then I remembered that I own a basket that comes from Botswana (southern Africa) and was made by San (Bushmen)  -

It lives here, amid my cookbooks, conundrums, and other mementos -

The whale (in case you are wondering...) is the "negative space" of the wood around a toy I made for my baby son, some 35 years ago - the sailor climbed a rope that went through his hands and feet (his raised arm and hat make the outline of the whale's tail); the other half of the offcut became another whale but goodness knows where that one, and indeed the sailor toy, got to.
