Museum sketchbooks

A Greek bowl in the British Museum - fused glass, broken and repaired -
Modern glass in the V&A -
One day they might morph into quilts, or ...?
Plenty more sketchbooks to get ideas from -

This is exactly why I refuse to keep a sketchbook - I have two, one from college days one one a few years old, all filled with designs that will never come to life. It's as if once on the page, even just black lines, I'm just not moved to take them further!

Wow that's a tremendous collection of sketchbooks. I really love the broken and repaired glass work. Unlike Deb I couldn't manage without sketchbooks as my memory is so poor these days! It also helps to clarify my ideas and enables me to take them a step further than I would do if relying on memory alone. Once it's written down, it's mine, and I can play with it more easily!! Mine are very very fat though and don't shut because I stick so many bits of paper in them and rather than leave them with pages unused, I have to persevere until there are no blank pages left. A little sad really!

Filling sketchbooks can be a project in its own right. I carry a small one to pass the time while waiting for buses etc, and because I like looking at things with a pen in my hand...

For those that bulge because of too much stuck in -- try cutting out some of the pages, leaving just a stub near the spine. Dreadful waste of paper?? - well, it's not difficult to make your own. One day I'll get around to putting up a tutorial on this.

It's interesting to go back to early sketchbooks and find that you're working on the same themes still.
