The edge of the hole

And on the subject of holes, Kurt Tucholsky wrote about the philosophic sociology of the hole in 1931. Read the translation here.

"The most intriguing part of a hole is its edge. ... The edge of the hole guards the frontier of the material."

What happens when a hole is filled up, when the edge can hold it no longer?
