The subjects of Abdoulaye Konate's work include the encroachment of the Sahel, deforestation, living under dictatorship, and the impact of AIDS. Originally a painter, he now works in textile installations.
Strips of cotton - a readily available medium - have become his signature style, as in the window installation at Rivington Place, London, 7 Dec to 3 Jan, which "communicates global diversity issues directly to the street" -
"These large expanses of fabric play host to stiched and woven symbols and swathes of colour employed to powerful effect. Here he reflects on the relationship in Africa between power and religion and the position of Christianity and Islam within political and cultural life."
Konate studied in Bamako (Mali) and in Cuba, and lives and works in Bamako. See more work here.
