Take a length of cloth and some longer lengths of sturdy thread. Stitch each thread along the length of cloth. Gather.
Paint.
Remove the threads.
Here they are, neatly braided and ready to re-use on another length.
Impatient to see what it looked like dry, I ironed the still-gathered cloth between other cloth:

Great effect - now what?
Lovely marks in the last piece particularly. If I have enough strength to push the needle thro I may give this a go.
How simple is that? I think I could manage trying that right now. Still a bit uninspired and not wanting to work on the in progress stuff from before the dog went to her great reward last week. This might be just the ticket.
