Pae White at South London Gallery

The exhibition has closed but was worth going to see. In Pae White's "Too much night, again" threads stretched across the room made a tunnel through which you walked, reading the words and seeing the letters that were the source of the thread (sort of like sound waves?) as you steered a straight course.

The amount of screwing-in of eyes for attaching the threads is mind-boggling, the amount of knots tied, the great length of yarn used... A short video on the gallery's website shows the installation of the "3D textile super-graphic installation piece" (click here). The artist says the project is a kind of portrait of her late-night anxieties.

The architecture of the site presents a unique opportunity. "In a way it's kind of a self-portrait within this space."

The material is 100% acrylic, so it holds a good tension - "it's very forgiving" - and not an exotic material.
